  15. All Well on EUVE
  16. -----------------
  17. The EUVE observatory continues to operate very smoothly. The last
  18. few weeks since the last newsletter have seen observation of the
  19. following sources on the behalf of EUVE Guest Observers:
  20. Sigma Gem, VV Pup, GD 153, HD111812, HZ43,WD 1234+482,RE 1149 +28
  21. YZ CMi, AN UMA, and AD Leo is currently being observed. Several of
  22. the sources known to be variable are seen to vary in the deep
  23. survey images obtained simultaneously with the spectra.

  25. New EUVE Bright Source List Issued
  26. ----------------------------------
  27. A new EUVE Bright Source list was issued to the project by Brett Stroozas
  28. and the EUVE Data Analysis Support Group. The new list now
  29. includes 270 definite sources. The breakdown of the likely optical
  30. counterparts is 135 unidentified, 80 late type stars, 36 white
  31. dwarfs, 7 Cataclysmic Variables, 3 BL Lac objects, 1 AGN,
  32. 4 A stars, 1 B star, 1 LMXB, 1 PN and One X ray pulsar (AMHer). An
  33. additional 100 bright sources are being screened for addition
  34. to the source list for the next internal release in March. The
  35. EUVE Bright Source List will be released publically at the June
  36. meeting of the American Astronomical Society, and will be provided
  37. as an appendix for the NASA NRA for the second round of GO proposals.

  39. First results from the EUVE Deep Survey
  40. ---------------------------------------
  41. Behram Antia and John Vallerga presented the first results from
  42. the EUVE deep survey at last weeks science team meeting. The
  43. Deep Survey instrument surveys the ecliptic in two bands ( Lexan
  44. and Aluminum) to a significantly deeper sensistivity than the
  45. all sky survey due to the longer exposure times and lower
  46. geocoronal background looking down the earths shadow cone. The
  47. first analysis of the deep survey Lexan Band indicates that
  48. large numbers of sources are being detected with roughly
  49. 9 times more sources per square degree than in the current
  50. all sky EUVE Bright Source List.

  52. First EUVE Image of the Vela Supernova Remnant
  53. ---------------------------------------------
  54. Dr peter Vedder presented the EUVE image of the Vela supernova
  55. remnant (following up on the image of Cygnus). Some of
  56. the bright knots in the EUV image are bright enough to
  57. detect with the EUVE spectrometer.

  59. EUVE Guest Observer Program delivers first data to Guest Observers
  60. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  61. The EUVE Guest Observer Center is now processing GO data. The first set
  62. of observations to be processed are the 'Fast Track' GO's. These observations
  63. are from the IOC (In-Orbit Checkout) and Survey calibration pointings.
  64. These GO's will receive a 'best effort' data set based on
  65. our current reference data set. This will consist of spectra with
  66. the most current wavelength scale and images not containing timing
  67. information. The Fast Track GO's have been notified of this status
  68. and are beginning to receive the data as it is processed.
  69.  
  70. Following the Fast Track processing, normal GO processing will begin.
  71. It is expected that this will begin March 8th. GO's will be notified
  72. by the EGO Center when their target has been scheduled (aprox. 1 month
  73. in advance). They will also be notified after the observation has been
  74. taken by the ESOC and told of any difficulties or problems during
  75. their pointing. At first, the EGO Center expects a 2 months lag between
  76. the taking of the observation and delivery of data to the GO but this
  77. will be reduced to one week as the processing becomes more automated.
  78. GO's will be notifed as to when they can visit the EGO Center and/or
  79. receive their tape.

  95. We are writing a review on SPECTROSCOPIC DIAGNOSTICS IN THE EUV-UV
  96. FOR SOLAR AND STELLAR PLASMAS for the Astronomy and Astrophysics Review
  97. journal. We would be grateful to receive reprints and preprints of any
  98. relevant publications (or references) on this subject. Initially, Helen
  99. Mason  will concentrate on the solar work and Brunella Monsignor-Fossi
  100. on the stellar work, but if you could send all the papers to both of us,
  101. this would be very useful. The scope of the review will cover analyses of
  102. past and present observations together with an overview of future plans
  103. (eg FUSE Lyman and SOHO).  Thank you in advance for your help.

  105. CALL FOR EUV ASTRONOMY PAPERS FOR JUNE AAS SPECIAL TOPICAL SESSION
  106. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  107. A Special Topical session "EUV Astronomy: A look through a New Window"
  108. will be held on Tuesday June 8 1993 at the Meeting of the American
  109. Astronomical Society in Berkeley, California . Invited talks include Stuart
  110. Bowyer and Roger Malina on new EUVE results, Carole Jordan on stellar coronae
  111. Stephane Vennes on hot White Dwarfs, Ken Pounds on ROSAT WFC results, HUT EUV
  112. Observations by Randy Kimble and other invited presentations currently being
  113. arranged. An evening poster session and reception will be held at the
  114. Center for EUV Astrophycsis. Submissions of talks and poster
  115. papers are solicited. Submissions should be sent in to the AAS
  116. through the regular AAS submission process with an indication
  117. that scheduling in the topical session on EUV astronomy
  118. is requested. Copies of abstracts should also be sent to
